DR ABU DE VILLIERS

General Practitioner

MBChB (Stell.) 2017
DipPEC (SA) 2022

Areas of Interest

– Symptom management for chronic and serious illnesses.
– Guiding patients and families through complex health decisions
– Drawing on emergency and critical care experience to provide compassionate, informed support

Experience

I trained and worked as a medical doctor in one of the busiest emergency centers in the Western Cape, gaining extensive experience in managing acute, complex, and high-pressure cases. Over time, I’ve shifted my focus toward supporting patients with chronic and serious illnesses, providing compassionate care, symptom management, and guidance for families navigating difficult health decisions. This transition allows me to combine my critical care experience with a more holistic, patient-centered approach, ensuring care that is both informed and deeply supportive.

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time in nature, practicing yoga, and exploring mindfulness and personal growth. I’m passionate about film—the stories told, the human experiences represented on screen, and the way different art forms are blended into a single motion picture.

Experience

After my studies I elected to stay on and work at Groote Schuur Hospital to gain wider experience. The career choices thereafter spanned being Sister in Charge at a Private Hospital (Leeuwendal), working in palliative care in satellite community clinics, and as a team leader at St Lukes Hospice, 2 township/community developmental projects, HIV care, and thereafter in geriatric care in a care facility in Cape Town. I have since joined the team at Chariot and have found it to be extremely rewarding and educational.

My interests include road running, writing poetry and baking/cooking.

I feel extremely grateful to have a strong tribe of friends, gathered since junior school in Cape Town, with whom I maintain a lot of contact and derive great support.
