LMCC Canada 2002
PG Diploma in Palliative Medicine (UCT) 2007

Areas of Interest
  • Geriatric and Palliative Care
  • Coordinated teamwork to take care of vulnerable patients at home.
Experience

After completing my university degree at UCT and internship at Victoria Hospital I went on to do my community service year at False Bay Hospital in 1999.

From there I went abroad and worked as a GP in rural areas of Eastern Canada from 2000-2004. I then returned to Cape Town to be in private GP practice, Brampton Surgery from 2005-2010.

My dedication to improving geriatric and palliative care motivated me to establish Chariot Health, in 2010, as a home-visit service. Chariot Health has grown steadily over the years to its current capacity in providing coordinated care to patients across the Cape Peninsula and up the West Coast.

‘I have a passionate relationship with music and have been a singer-songwriter-guitarist since the late eighties. I enjoy writing songs and playing in a band with my daughter and other talented musicians.
I have also had a passion for windsurfing since my childhood and have competed at the sports highest levels but now just enjoy being out in the wind and the waves.’

Areas of Interest
  • Primary care geriatrics
  • Chronic pain
  • Palliative care
Experience

I found my way into clinical practice after working as an infectious disease epidemiologist in the Cape Town Metro HIV services. My work with Médecins sans Frontières took me to the frontline of the Ebola epidemic in 2014, and it was working alongside clinicians in the emergency treatment centres in Sierra Leone that inspired me to study Medicine.

I undertook an internship at Victoria Hospital, Wynberg and community service at Retreat Community Health Centre, where I continue to work part time in acute, chronic and palliative care, and geriatric outreach services. I started at Chariot Health in August 2025, focusing on geriatric and palliative care. Having completed a two-year Postgraduate Diploma in Family Medicine and a certificate in interdisciplinary pain management, I enjoy practicing a patient and family-centred approach to care.

When not working or studying, you might find me cooking a meal for my family, sitting on the couch with my Great Dane, or going for a run with friends.

DR ABU DE VILLIERS

General Practitioner

MBChB (Stell.) 2017
DipPEC (SA) 2022

Areas of Interest

– Symptom management for chronic and serious illnesses.
– Guiding patients and families through complex health decisions
– Drawing on emergency and critical care experience to provide compassionate, informed support

Experience

I trained and worked as a medical doctor in one of the busiest emergency centers in the Western Cape, gaining extensive experience in managing acute, complex, and high-pressure cases. Over time, I’ve shifted my focus toward supporting patients with chronic and serious illnesses, providing compassionate care, symptom management, and guidance for families navigating difficult health decisions. This transition allows me to combine my critical care experience with a more holistic, patient-centered approach, ensuring care that is both informed and deeply supportive.

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time in nature, practicing yoga, and exploring mindfulness and personal growth. I’m passionate about film—the stories told, the human experiences represented on screen, and the way different art forms are blended into a single motion picture.

Experience

I initially trained as a high school teacher and taught Science for two years between 1976 and 1977.

I was persuaded to change to medicine and returned to university, completing my medical degree at the university of Zimbabwe in 1983. My internship was completed in 1984 at Edendale Hospital in Pietermaritzberg. I stayed on in Pietermaritzberg getting valuable experience working in the Greys / Northdale hospitals unit. I then went on to join the large general practice in Estcourt where I worked as a GP for the next six years to 1993.

My experience since my time in Escort has taken me on two stints with the Anglo-American corporation at the Westvaal Hospital in Orkney (1993-1996 and 1999-2001) and a valuable 3 years as an ICU doctor in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (1996-1999).

Diploma in Primary Emergency Care (CMSA) 2022
FCEM (SA) Part 1 (CMSA) 2024
Palliative Care Introductory Course (UCT) 2025

Areas of Interest

Emergency and remote medicine, geriatric and palliative care, infectious diseases, and research.

Experience

The last few years I was working in trauma and emergency medicine at Groote Schuur Hospital. This is where I realised the need for palliative care and felt drawn to this area of medicine. It helped me recognise the importance of this type of care, which begins early to prevent crises and provides patients and their families with education, guidance, and support to reduce hospital admissions.

My transition into this field began with locuming for Chariot Health in order to learn and grow my skills. I am excited to now be a part of the permanent team.

Outside of the workspace I enjoy ultra-marathon trail running, swing dancing and playing piano.

I have a big passion for incorporating movement, nature, mindfulness and healthy relationships in the path to healing.
